ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Teaching specialized subject matter(s), motivating students to achieve maximum potential. Develop lesson plans and use instructional materials. Translate lesson plans into learning experiences. Integrate subject area content and technology. Instruct students in area(s) of specialization and subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Establish and maintain standards of behavior. Adapt teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students. Develop standards for critical analysis through group discussions. Encourage students to think independently, develop and express original ideas. Evaluate students' progress, maintain appropriate records, prepare progress reports. Communicate with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means. Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional books and growth activities. Establish a class environment favorable to learning. Administer standardized tests in accordance with the established procedures. Identify student needs; assist with assessment of needs. Select and requisition books and instructional materials. Participate in child study, Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings. Participate in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required. Perform related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of secondary education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in area of specialization or an acceptable field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
