Summary

The Painter I is responsible for basic surface preparation and spray painting of scale assemblies and parts. This position will be required to operate paint systems, maintain tools and equipment, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Additionally, this position will support housekeeping and 5S initiatives.

Essential Job Duties

  • Inspects surfaces prior to painting to ensure proper preparation.
  • Mixes paints according to technical procedures and established standards.
  • Operates GRACO air-assisted airless spray system under supervision.
  • Applies paint to large metal structures using electrostatic or spray guns.
  • Inspects painted work for coverage quality and absence of defects or foreign material.
  • Maintains painting equipment and tools per scheduled maintenance requirements.
  • Performs housekeeping and 5S duties in the paint booth and surrounding work areas.
  • Documents material usage and equipment maintenance logs accurately.
  • Assists with moving and positioning assemblies using overhead cranes.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications - Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of industrial spray-painting experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills and abilities commonly associated with this position.

  • Ability to identify surface defects and apply correct painting techniques.
  • Ability to understand paint mixing, safety practices, and respirator usage.
  • Ability to understand, remember, and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to learn new tasks, processes and procedures quickly and from experience.
  • Willingness to be trained on GRACO systems.
  • Willingness to learn EPA and environmental standards.
  • Willingness to learn about industrial coatings and proper application procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under general supervision.
  • Ability to learn and follow all respirator protocols and other safety protocols.
  • Effective communication skills with a team-oriented, safety-first mindset.

Work Environment - Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • General Manufacturing environment including regular exposure to high noise levels, outdoor climate and weather fluctuations including temperature, humidity, rain, etc., dust, uneven ground, exposure to hazardous equipment, and contaminants.
  • Standard schedule with frequent overtime hours and weekend work may be required.

  • Regularly required to talk and hear audible signals and warnings from machines, equipment, and plant warning systems.
  • Required to use near and far vision to perceive paint imperfections or surface irregularities, ability to focus and visually determine shapes and colors inspect materials or products for color variation, read small print, gauges and displays to operate machinery.
  • Frequently required to use manual dexterity to operate controls, levers, buttons on machinery, tools, machinery, adjust instrumentation and ability to move wrist, hand and/or finger movement repetitively to work on machine controls and type.
  • Must be able to bend knee and waist, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, climb stairs and ladders, sit, and stand or walk for prolonged periods of time (up to 10 hours per shift)
  • Required to frequently move or lift loads or materials up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques and exert force to push and pull objects and equipment throughout shift.
  • Ability to wear for entire work shift required personal protective equipment including coveralls, gloves, eye protection, respirators, steel toe safety boots with metatarsal guards, safety glasses with side shields, and hearing protection. Requires the ability to pass pulmonary capacity testing for respirators.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
